Literacy Learning in Action: Site Visits, Learning Intensives & Community

Join us Friday for an immersive day of learning, connection, and inspiration. Friday programming brings participants into schools and community spaces, offers practical learning grounded in research, and creates space to connect with educators, literacy leaders, young people, and community partners.

Spend the morning visiting a local literacy program, dive into a research-to-practice Learning Intensive in the afternoon, and  join us for welcome reception and fireside chat about literacy and life pathways, Friday is designed to help you see what’s possible, learn from others, and bring new insights and practices back to your community.​​​​​​​​​

8:00 AM –1 PM | Site Visits Experience literacy in action in and around Oakland. Choose on site from a selection of 6 site visits highlighting innovative approaches to literacy, community engagement, and learning. Each visit offers an opportunity to see programs and practices up close, hear directly from practitioners and partners, and explore the conditions that make impactful literacy work possible. Site visits will have staggered start and end times throughout the morning. Please note: Shuttle transportation will be provided from the Marriott Oakland City Center. Participants should arrive at the designated shuttle 30 minutes before their site visit begins.

1:30-4:30pm: Learning Intensives: Things That Work: What We Know, What We’re Learning, and What It Takes. Designed and sponsored by FULCRUM Friday’s Learning Intensives examine approaches across a continuum of evidence, from established interventions to promising tools and implementation models. Participants will consider what the evidence shows, what remains uncertain, the conditions that influence results, and what responsible implementation requires. 1:30–2:50 PM | Learning Intensives 2:50–3:00 PM | Break 3:00–4:20 PM | Learning Intensives Session details and presenters coming soon!

4:30–6:30 PM | Welcome Reception & Fireside Chat - Pathways, Not Pipelines: The Role of Literacy in Reclaiming Lives Join us for food and drinks, conversation, youth voice, and a powerful exploration of the role literacy can play in changing life trajectories. 4:30–5:00 PM | Munch & Mingle Enjoy appetizers and drinks while connecting with fellow Symposium participants in the Skyroom. 5:00–6:15pm Welcome and Fireside Chat What happens when literacy becomes a pathway to possibility rather than another barrier to opportunity? This powerful conversation will explore the ways literacy can help people reclaim agency, identity, and opportunity. Featuring voices from lived experience and literacy leadership, the conversation will challenge us to think differently about who gets access to literacy, what happens when that access is denied, and how literacy can become a catalyst for transformation. 6:15–6:30 PM | Audience Q&A & Closing
