Join us for a captivating opening Fireside Chat and reception featuring community leaders, DeRay Mckesson and Dr. Sabrina "Bri" Moore. 

DeRay Mckesson is an American civil rights activist, podcaster, and former school administrator. Born and raised in Baltimore, he graduated from Bowdoin College and holds honorary doctorates from The New School and the Maryland Institure College of Art. 

Dr. Sabrina “Bri” Moore is the Founder and Executive Director of 3Ls: Literacy, Leadership and Liberation. An Oakland-based organization, currently serving in Sobrante Park, changing literacy outcomes “One Neighborhood at a Time.”

Don't miss this dynamic conversation that promises to ignite our collective imagination about literacy and justice for all. The Fireside Chat will be happening March 1, from 3:30 pm to 6 pm at the Oakland Marriott City Center.

This event is open to all Literacy & Justice for All Symposium attendees. RSVP is required. You will be invited to RSVP for the event after you complete your general admission registration.

Literacy and Learning in Oakland: Pre-Conference Site Visits

Our Friday morning site-visits will highlight literacy and learning in Oakland schools. Join for live classroom observations and discussions.
 
A special thank you to our partners, Fulcrum and Oakland Starting Smart & Strong for leading these in-the-field experiences.
 
*Site visits are open to all Literacy & Justice for All Symposium attendees and require conference registration, and seats are extremely limited. Shuttle transportation will be provided from the Oakland Marriott City Center 30 minutes before the start of the scheduled visit, and return 30 minutes after. Each visit is self-contained with pick up and drop off to one site only. Due to availability we are asking attendees to only select one site visit. 

Registration information will be emailed to registered participants and seats are first come first served.

Oakland Unified School District Burckhalter Elementary Structured Literacy Learning Walk  brought to you by FULCRUM
  • Description: Our learning walk experience aims to provide participants with inspiration of what is possible through models of success, allowing them to observe effective practices in action. Attendees will be equipped with tools for conducting their own learning walks and have the opportunity to engage with leaders, seeking advice on implementation while addressing potential roadblocks and pitfalls. 

  • Grades: K-5

  • Time: 8:10 am - 11:15 am

  • Location: Burckhalter Elementary School

Lighthouse Structured Literacy Learning Walk brought to you by FULCRUM
  • Description Our Structured Literacy learning walk experience aims to provide participants with inspiration of what is possible through odels of success and allowing them to observe effective practices in action. Attendees will be equipped with tools for conducting their own learning walks and have he opportunity to engage with leaders hwo will be sharing their insights, both successes and roadblocks, on their journey to implement the science of reading.

  • Grades: K-5

  • Time: 11:30 am- 2:30 pm

TK Site Visit brought to you by Oakland Starting Smart & Strong
Oakland Unified School District Kaiser Early Learning Center brought to you by Oakland Starting Smart and Strong
  • Description: OUSD Kaiser Early Learning Center is a new model in Oakland, with three early learning program models included at one site (special day classes, prekindergarten and transitional kindergarten). Site visit will include observations in 3 classrooms, followed by a discussion with site coaches, administrators, teachers, and family participant (if possible). Participants will be provided with a learning walk observation tool to take notes as they observe the early literacy instruction, interactions and environment of the classrooms.

  • Grades: TK

  • Time: 9am-11am 

  • Location: Kaiser Early Childhood Center

Room to Bloom - Lotus Bloom Family Resource Center brought to you by Oakland Starting Smart and Strong
  • Description: Room to Bloom's 0-5 Playgroup is a parent/caregiver-child program that fosters early learning experiences in a family atmosphere. The site visit will include engagement and participation in playgroup activities, followed by a discussion with Room to Bloom staff and participating families. 

  • Grades: TK

  • Time: 10am -12 pm

Oakland Unified School District Library Panel at Montera Middle School brought to you by OUSD Library Services and Lead by Learning 
  • Description: Data shows that when students read books of personal interest to them, they read more and their literacy skills improve. But connecting students with the books they want to read can be a challenge. OUSD library staff will share their expertise in soliciting student feedback and collecting data to curate a book list that is current, inclusive, engaging, and provides a range of books that promote literacy for all. With strategies that support building a library collection, selecting titles for a book giveaway, and encouraging independent reading, this session is intended for all community organizations and educators.

  • Grades: TK-12

  • Time: 9:00 am -10:30 am 

  • Location: Montera Middle School Library
