Leadership for Literacy
Session Description
In this interactive session, the principal, literacy coach, and teachers from Nystrom Elementary will share how they've been taking action to improve reading outcomes at their school.
The team will share how the staff co-constructed, implemented, and collaborated to continuously revise their school's literacy action plan. This session will explain, from a variety of perspectives, how a vision for literacy can become a reality.
Bring your questions related to the practicalities of ensuring that students receive their civil right to read.

Margaret Goldberg
Literacy Coach
Nystrom Elementary School
Margaret Goldberg is currently a literacy coach at Nystrom Elementary. She has held a variety of roles including Oakland Unified's Early Literacy Lead, site-based literacy coach, reading interventionist, and classroom teacher. In every role, she's worked to help schools and districts align instruction with reading research.
She is the co-founder of The Right to Read Project, a group of teachers, researchers, and activists committed to the pursuit of equity through literacy. Her writing is published on The Right to Read Project blog and on Reading Rockets.
Jamie Allardice
Principal
Nystrom Elementary School
Jamie Allardice is the long-time principal of Nystrom Elementary. By focusing on adult collaboration and student data, Jamie established a culture of continuous improvement at Nystrom. Three years ago, his team of teachers developed a Literacy Action Plan which has resulted in the highest reading growth in the West Contra Costa Unified School District. He's excited to share what he's learned about the science of reading, effective literacy instruction, and leadership.
Jessica Jang
First Grade Teacher
Nystrom Elementary School
Jessica Jang teaches first grade at Nystrom Elementary. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Education at the University of Delaware and is currently pursuing her Masters of Science in Education through Johns Hopkins. She is passionate about learning and wants to instill that same mission in her students.
